Large Murano ‘Scavo’ glass vase, signed Toso on the base.(GHP)
A Large Murano mid-century”Scavo”glass vase, signed by Toso on the base.45.5 cm 18″ high. This is a beautiful example of Scavo glass, a style that became a hallmark of Murano craftsmanship in the mid-20th century.
The term Scavo literally translates from Italian to “excavated” or “dug up.” (The Process: To achieve this look, glassmakers apply a mixture of chemical salts, carbonates, and nitrates to the surface of the glass while it is still hot) (around 800°C).
The Result: The chemicals react with the heat to create a matte, etched, and slightly iridescent patina. It is designed to mimic the appearance of ancient Roman or Greek glass that has spent centuries buried underground, acquiring a crusty, weathered texture from mineral deposits.
Fratelli Toso: This is the most likely candidate. Founded in 1854, Fratelli Toso is famous for its “archeological” revivals. In the 1970s and 80s, they produced a significant “Scavo” line, often featuring classical amphora shapes with applied handles or spiral trails (like your blue coil).
