A Murano green glass bottle vase, by Stephano Toso, signed on the base.(GHP)
This bottle vase features a classic long-necked, bulbous-base form that draws inspiration from ancient apothecary vessels. The color is a vibrant, translucent teal-turquoise, which glows with varied intensity depending on the light.
The most distinctive feature is the frosted, “sugared” texture applied to the surface. This effect, likely achieved through acid-etching or a scavo (earthy/eroded) technique, gives the glass a soft, velvety appearance that mimics the weathering of ancient Roman glass recovered from archaeological sites. The white, hazy patina concentrated around the neck and base provides a beautiful contrast to the deep saturation of the body.
Stefano Toso comes from one of Venice’s most prestigious glassmaking families. His work is celebrated for its minimalist geometry and specialized surface treatments. Rather than relying on the flamboyant patterns often associated with Murano, Toso focuses on the “skin” of the glass, creating pieces that feel as much like stone or silk as they do crystal.
Hand-Finished Rim: The slightly flared, flattened lip is a hallmark of hand-blown Italian glass.
The incamiciato technique involves layering different colors of glass; here, the turquoise is likely layered over a lighter core to enhance its luminosity.
Its height and slender profile make it a perfect statement piece for Mid-Century Modern or Contemporary interiors.
