A large Murano Vase in dark pink by Gino Cenedese, signed on the base. (40cm high 16″ approx.)(GHP)
This sophisticated piece is a superb example of the technical precision and mid-century aesthetic synonymous with Gino Cenedese, one of the most influential names in 20th-century Murano glass. This vase perfectly balances a robust, architectural form with a soft, ethereal finish. Satinato (Satin-finish) with Mold-Blown Ribbing
The vase features a sturdy, cylindrical body that transitions into a short, elegant neck with a flared, funnel-shaped rim. The design is defined by its rhythmic, diagonal swirling ribs (often called the torchon effect), which wrap around the vessel to create a sense of upward motion.
Vibrant Amethyst/Burgundy: The glass is a deep, saturated shade of plum or amethyst. The intensity of the color varies across the ribs—deeper in the grooves and lighter on the ridges—which adds significant visual depth.
The Satinato Finish: The entire surface has been acid-etched or sandblasted to achieve a matte, velvety texture. This “frosted” look diffuses light beautifully, softening the bold color and giving the piece a sophisticated, non-reflective glow.
Under Gino Cenedese’s leadership, the Cenedese furnace became a hub for experimentation. While many Murano firms stayed with high-gloss finishes, Cenedese excelled in tonal minimalism. This vase represents the “Neo-Classical” side of mid-century Italian design—taking a simple, repetitive texture and elevating it through perfect proportions and a single, powerful colour choice.
The combination of the raised ribbing and the satin finish makes this an exceptionally tactile piece; it feels like smooth, weathered stone or heavy silk.
Cenedese is known for using high-quality lead glass that retains a certain “heaviness” and resonance, even when treated with a matte finish.
