Murano glass vessel by D. Moretti, signed on base, 34.5cm 14″ approx.(GHP)
This vibrant vessel is an exceptional piece by Davide Moretti, a contemporary Murano master known for his high-energy designs and complex glass-layering techniques. This vase serves as a brilliant example of how modern Murano glass can be both structurally heavy and visually effervescent.
Techniques: Pulegoso (Bubbled glass), Oro Zecchino (Gold leaf), and Applied Glass Threading
The vase features a heavy, thick-walled ovoid silhouette with a slightly tapered rim and a weighted base. The aesthetic is a masterclass in fire-toned color play and textural contrast.
The Pulegoso Effect: The body of the vase is filled with thousands of tiny, controlled air bubbles (puleghe). This classic Murano technique creates a “fizzing” appearance, giving the glass an internal life and making it appear semi-opaque.Golden Amber Gradient: Infused within the glass is a rich amber and burnt orange gradient, further enhanced by the inclusion of 24kt gold leaf. The gold is suspended within the glass, catching the light to create a shimmering, metallic inner glow.
Red Glass Wrap: The lower third of the vase is encircled by multiple layers of vibrant red glass threading. This “wrapped” effect is applied while the glass is molten, adding a tactile, 3D element to the piece. The bold red acts as a sharp visual anchor against the softer golden tones of the body.
Davide Moretti is celebrated for his ability to combine traditional techniques—like the 1920s-era pulegoso—with a bold, 21st-century color palette. His work often feels “organic,” as if the glass is still in a semi-liquid state. This vase represents a bridge between the historical luxury of gold-infused glass and the raw, expressive energy of contemporary Italian art.
